HATLAB Studio
HATLAB Studio is the research, learning and innovation space managed by the HAT Community Foundation.
It brings together specialists in data and the digital economy to explore how data rights, sovereignty and agency can work in practice.
The Studio works across research, policy, education and innovation, connecting new ideas with real-world problems and experimentation.
Research
We develop research & thought leadership papers on the economics, governance and design of institutions and markets in the data economy.
Our work spans data rights, digital markets, data intermediaries, AI governance, Smart Data and new models of economic coordination.
Learning
We bring together researchers, practitioners and policymakers to learn how digital markets and ecosystems work - and how to design better ones.
Through courses, design clinics, seminars and events, we develop the capabilities needed for a rapidly changing data economy.
Policy
We work with governments, universities, organisations and communities on emerging questions in data policy and market design.
Our focus is not only on how data should be governed, but on the institutions and markets needed to turn data rights into economic and social value.
Innovation
We turn ideas into experiments.
The Studio develops and tests new approaches to trusted data exchange, Smart Data, digital credentials and data-enabled markets.
HATLAB Studio Paper Series
The HATLAB Studio Paper Series is a collection of academic, policy and thought pieces produced by the Studio and its community.
Papers may originate from questions or requests from governments, organisations, industry or other institutions. Regardless of who asks the question, the resulting opinions and research are published openly for everyone to read.
